Their Eyes Were Watching God

In the movie based on Zora Neale Hurston's novel, Janie struggles to find love. One could argue Janie is a victim because of her gender and that she finds true companionship only when she is respected as a female.

In what ways does gender influence Janie? Cite specific examples from the movie.

Due: Thursday, Feb. 17. Write a minimum of 5 sentences and explore at least 3 examples from the movie. PROOFREAD!

  1. Gender greatly influences Jaine through out the movie. This is because most of the men she meets promise her of freedom and a care free life. For example when she is with the man that her grandma makes her go with she isn't happy because he has a predictable and hard working life with little freedom. But when the well dressed, confident man is talking to her promising her a new and great life she quickly clings on to him for over 20 years. In much of the movie she is with the men of the town joking with them and just being a very big tom-boy. This makes her very happy for the short time she is able to be like this. Another example is when the young working man comes along, making her feel once again care free and young again. Later she runs away with him. The main influence the other gender shows is that, if they let her be her self and free she loves them and doesnt think of the consequences.

  2. Gender influences Janie in a few ways. Because she is a women, she is expected to act a certain way by the men in her life. When Joe yells at her for not doing what he wants, she listens to him. Joe says that she shouldn't dress like the other women in the town. Janie thinks that women should be free, but she is afraid of them so she listens.Joe tells her that she shouldn't wear her hair down and she should be cooking and waiting on him. Janie listens and obeys this because she is afraid.

Janie has trouble finding love because she is a girl in a few ways. Early in her life her grand mother married her off to an old man that she didn't even know. Also, when she leaves her husband he says that she isn't anyhthing without him. She also marries another man and he beats her so she can't do anything back.

In the movie, Janie's gender influences her because her husband refuses to let her give a speech after the crowd chants for her to give one. Her husband doesn't respect her as a person, and causes Janie to change her opinion about him. Janie also changes her opinion about him once he hits her in front of all the men. He takes advantage of his strength and more masculine characteristics and uses them to physically abuse Janie. Janie decides to leave her husband once he hits her, but then comes back because he makes her feel like there are no better opportunities out there in the world for her. He takes all of her hope for a better life and crushes it.

  5. From the movie "Their Eyes Were Watching God" based on the novel by Zora Neale Hurston, Janie's gender influences her in the decisions she makes, as well as the way she is viewed. In the very beginning, her grandmother says she has to marry a man and won't let her marry a man she loves. Instead, she must marry a much older man because he has more land and money. Since Janie is a woman, she must marry or else she'll die all alone an old maid. With her first husband, she is talked down to since she is a woman, also when she wishes to leave her husband, he says, "You don't know nothing about the world." This can show that because she is a woman she is treated like she is dumb, when really she isn't.

Later, she remarries and her second husband doesn't let her make a speech or offer any encouraging words of winsom, going back to the dumb thing. Since Janie is a lady, her husband believes she doesn't know anything and can't give a simple speech. Later when she tries to leave him, he thinks she will be nothing better than a "good time gal" showing that since she is a woman, he thinks she can't survive on her own. Also, she has to obey her husband no matter what and can't talk back to him. Even when she's slapped across the face she can't do anything about it since she's a woman and the people watching would think badly of her.

Although Janie can live on her own and be free, her gender prevents her from doing so. When her second husband dies, she is able to live on her own. She's even happier than she was with her husband. She said she was free. Janie was able to support herself while other woman were trapped to their ways of a stereotypical housewife. She didn't have to listen to her grandmother, she could've run away and lived on her own. Although Janie is a free spirit who could survive on her own, her gender prevented her on doing so.

  6. Janie might feel because she's a girl that she may find it hard to find true love. Janie’s gender could tie in to this difficulty because during this time some men felt superior to women. The only men she has known to "love" have not been able to show her what she thought love was. She has her guard up to men because she has seen how they have played women from her town first hand. The women she has known closely and have seen them fall in love with guys and run off with, have all come back losing everything. It wasn’t the easiest thing in the world to get respect from a guy so she wasn’t trying to waste her time. Being a woman during this time could have influence Janie’s process of trying to find love in life.

  7. Women back then were always looked down upon by men. Janie experiences this a lot in what we've watched of the movie so far. Her husband Joe hit her, and insulted her when she wasn't doing what he wanted her to do; or if she disrespected him to defend herself against his disrespect towards her. Even after Joe dies, she is still treated unfairly. The man she met, and ran off with stole her money, and lost it all. With no apology, or repaying her money. Men treated women like this because they knew the women wouldn't, and couldn't do anything about it. Janie was afraid of getting hurt; so she rarely stepped out of line. To me, her gender greatly influenced her, her life, and her future.

  8. In the movie, Their Eyes Were Watching God, Janie is influenced by her gender. For example, in the beginning of the movie, Janie is making out with a male who works on the farm and her grandmother yells at her and forces her to marry a man who is old and has 60 acres. Also, I think that Janie feels that because she is a woman, she can fool around and have fun without any consequences. She is also very strong mentally and physically, and works at the village, even though her husband was the mayor. Since she is a female, she is easily taken advantage of. For instants, when Janie tries to help her husband out because he was so old and frail, he criticizes her, so she stood up for herself and criticized him and he slapped her across the face. She couldn’t fight against him because she is a woman. In addition, she packs up her things and tries to leave, but her husband threatens her and she stays there even though she is unhappy. Another example is near the end where Janie leaves the village and goes with Teacake, who is much younger than she is, and then they have sexual intercourse, and she wakes up and realizes that he took advantage of her and stole all of her money. Those are a few examples and reasons how gender influences Janie in the movie.

  9. Janie's gender not only causes her issues, but costs her a peaceful life in her eyes. She is a strong, wild, and, independent woman. Men she thought she was in love with didn't respect her for her opinions or her personality. They wanted a wife that would be obediant no matter what. Janie didn't believe that she should be treated that way because she thought it was unfair, that just because she was a woman that she couldn't have an opinion about anything. Her second husband made her wear a wrap, then become a servent, then when she finally fought back she was hit because she was supposed to be an obediant wife. TeaCake gave her the repect she wanted so she thought that maybe he was the one. Maybe he is. Finally, after her husbands death she feels free.

  10. Gender influenced Janie because in the beginning of the movie, Janie is married to a man who treats her terribly. She is forced to work outside, and do all of his dirty work for him. Such as, cleaning, 'plowing', catching pigs, which men are suppose to do outside work, women should do housework. However since she is a woman, he knows she'll listen to him. Second, Janie runs off from her first husband to Joe Stars, who promises to treat her like a lady. However, Joe forces her into a very tight gown, and it's stitching cuts Janie's sides. Joe Stars also hits Janie when she talks back to him. Her gender influences this, because according to Joe Stars she is suppose to do everything he says, because she is 'the mayor's wife'. Finally, when Janie meets T-Cake, everybody tells her not to run off, because they think he'll just get his pleasure and leave her behind, as a one time girl.

  11. Janie could be seen as a victim because she is always falling for the wrong person. She started by marring the farmer who she left in a short time because she felt the need to change. Also how she went with Tee Cake and he ended up takking all her money. Janie chose the way she was because she could never settle down like any other woman should have, she felt that she had to always be in control of her own life. By being a woman, men could easly perswade Janie in falling in love with them not for her personalitiy but for her looks and money. For instance Jody Starks only saw the beutiful young woman and never really knew who she was. So by being a woman in this time people took advantage over you just like Jaine.

  12. Throughout the movie Janie was expected to live at a certain standard and was looked down upon my men. Her grandmother thought that Janie was not able to find a man that she had to be married off to a man to support her. To her grandmother she was not able to support herself in life; she needed a man with money and land. Little things like when she becomes the mayor’s wife and her friends want her to give a speech her husband say that she did not become mayor’s wife for that and that she didn’t know how to do such. As Janie’s husband becomes more and more comfortable with his wife he thought of her more as slave. He expected his wife to only bring him his food and do “women’s work” and acted as if she was no long a person. He demined her till she went from a free and happy woman into an empty shell of what he expected her to be.

  13. Janie is arguably a victim because she is a female. She lives in a time where females do not have their own opinions and are severely restricted in what they are allowed to say and do. Janie struggles to break free from that lifestyle and find someone who will make her feel capable of anything she desires. In the movie, she leaves the husband she is forced to marry when a mysteriously exciting man crosses her path. She admires the fact that he is able to leave everything he has in search for a better place to live. She follows him, feeling liberated and refreshed. Later on in the movie, he turns out trying to control her actions. He feels obligated to fulfil a sort of status he creates for his family and tries to force Janie to conform to his ways. Once again she feels trapped and tries to escape. He pulls her in and she must obey him because he is the dominant one in the relationship. On multiple occasions Janie is judged for trying to be an independent woman. She goes against what is acceptable for a woman in her time period and in ways is a victim to her society's rash judgements.

  14. blueksy,
In the movie Their Eyes Were Watching God Janie was influenced by the female heritage. Women were inferior and she could never do what she wanted; she was always controlled by her husband. Her second husband who was the mayor of Eatonville slapped her when she had criticized him. After her husband died she felt free and she loved it. Janie found a new man and someone she eventually called her boyfriend. Tea cake was 12 years younger than her and in this time dating someone younger was not a good thing. The odds were stacked against her because the younger men always took the women far away and then disappeared the next day out of nowhere with all their money and belongings. Janie didn't care, she was finally happy that she was getting treated like she was supposed to; like she disserved to be treated. Janie woke up to an empty bed, no money, and the car gone..She thought he ran away. But to her surprise he came back and explained everything. This was not what she expected it to come to. Because she is a women she did not have much freedom, and she was often tied down wheither she liked it or not.

  15. Janies gender influences her by having to act a certain way towards people. When Janie was married to the mayor of eatonville she had to keep her ideas in her head. Janie likes to do what she wants what she wants but men at the time were supposed to do everything they wanted. But wives had to stay home and cook and clean. Janie only has a really nice relationship when she could do what she would like to do like when she was with T.K and he showed her how to shoot and went fishing with her. Janie was also enjoyed her time with The mayor until he said she couldnt talk or couldnt hangout with her friends. Janie is a women but she wants to be free when society tells her she is not allowed.

  16. In the movie, Janie is discriminizd against because she is a female. In the beggining of the story Janie's first husband wouldn't let her go into town with him. Janie was also not allowed to speak to the town when they had that party. And lastly when she runs of with Tecate he thinks it's alright to gamble her money away. That is how she is discriminated as a women

  17. Gender influenced Janie because women in this time period were treated as less than men. When Janie mouths off to Joe he hits her because he wants to show he is the boss. Teacake takes all of her money without asking her because he thought he was right. When Joe is making a speech at an event someone asked for Janie to talk. Joe told them she was just a woman and couldn't speak. All of the people in the town thought she was getting taken advantage of by Teacake because she was a woman with money.

  18. Janie shows characteristics that are unusual for women at this time period. She wants to live her life and be free, like when she leaves her first husband. When she runs away with Tea Cake the women in her town say that he will take her money and leave her. Janie wants to be in control of her life and find love but at this time period men expected their wives to be obedient and she was the opposite of that. She becomes offended when her husband Joe says that she cannot make a speech.

  19. Janies gender influences her I many ways. Being a young female she is married at the age of 17 to an old man. She is treated well but acts like a maid. She runs off and marries two more times. Her being a young female she is thought to be weak. This influences her to keep searching for love so she can find a dependable man.
